NHL: Buffalo 3, Edmonton 1

EDMONTON, Alberta, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Maxim Afinogenov scored the game-winning goal in the final period and added an assist, as the visiting Buffalo Sabres downed the Edmonton Oilers, 3-1.

Tim Connolly and Derek Roy tallied the other goals for the Sabres, while Ryan Miller had a solid game in net making 22 saves for Buffalo. Defenseman Teppo Numminen picked up two assists.

Ales Hemsky scored the lone goal for the Oilers, who have dropped three in a row and seven of their last 10 games. Goaltender Jussi Markkanen allowed three goals on 19 shots in defeat.

Buffalo went 2-for-11 with the man advantage, while Edmonton was scoreless in five chances.
