NHL: Carolina 3, Detroit 0

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Erik Cole scored the eventual game-winning goal and added an assist Tuesday as the Carolina Hurricanes edged the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2.

Carolina got off to a 3-0 first-period lead.

Matt Cullen and Ray Whitney each had goals and Martin Gerber turned away 36 shots for Carolina, which has won five straight. Eric Staal added two assists in the win.

Steve Yzerman and Henrik Zetterberg each scored for the Red Wings, who have dropped two in a row and three of their last five games. Goalie Manny Legace allowed three goals on 25 shots.
