SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Joe Nedney kicked a 33-yard field goal in overtime Sunday to give San Francisco a 20-17 win over Houston in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The loss assured the Texans, who closed at 2-14, of getting the No. 1 overall pick in next spring's college player draft. The Texans had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but Kris Brown missed a 31-yard field-goal attempt with the score tied at 17-17 with 6:07 left in the fourth quarter.
Alex Smith went 16-for-29 for 159 yards and one touchdown pass; Frank Gore rushed for 108 yards on 25 carries; and Mike Adams returned an interception for a touchdown for the 49ers (4-12), who ended their season with two straight wins.
In relief of the injured David Carr, Tony Banks went 14-of-25 for 173 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Texans.
