PITTSBURGH, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The Penguins, who have threatened to leave Pittsburgh unless a new stadium is built, scored twice without picking up a hockey stick, a report said.
The Penguins' first victory Monday came when developer Charles Betters said he will not apply for a slots parlor license for a Hays, Pa., Thoroughbred racetrack he wants to build.
Instead, Betters said, the Penguins should get the slots license.
The NHL team's second victory of the day came when state Auditor General Jack Wagner said whoever wins Pittsburgh's lone casino license should fund a new arena, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.
The Penguin's $1 billion development proposal is expected to be among at least five submitted to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board by Wednesday.
"There's no doubt that (the Penguin's) proposal has set the bar high for any potential licensee to get a license from the Gaming Commission," Wagner told the newspaper. "But the simple fact remains, we need to keep professional hockey in Pittsburgh, no matter who gets the license."
