Cardinals sign Encarnacion and Spivey

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Outfielder Juan Encarnacion and second baseman Junior Spivey have reached contract agreements with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Encarnacion, 30, got a three-year deal while Spivey signed for one year. No financial terms were disclosed.

"We have had Encarnacion at the top of our list among free agent outfielders this off-season," said General Manager Walt Jocketty on the Cardinals' Web site.

Encarnacion played in 141 games for the Florida Marlins last season, batting .287 with 16 home runs and 76 RBI. He is a career .268 hitter with 128 home runs and 541 RBI in 1,028 games and 3,845 at-bats.

Spivey, 30, who split time between Milwaukee and Washington last season, has a lifetime batting average of .270 with 48 homers and 201 RBI in 1,553 at-bats and has a career fielding average of .977. He suffered a broken right hand and missed 63 games, batting a combined .232 with seven homers and 24 RBI in just 77 contests.
