BUFFALO, N.Y., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- The University of Buffalo has named Turner Gill head football coach.
The school said Friday it had signed Gill to a five-year contract. Financial terms were not released.
"I am extremely excited to be able to bring a person of Turner's caliber -- not only as a coach, but as a person -- to the University at Buffalo," said Director of Athletics Warde Manuel.
Gill, 43, played quarterback at Nebraska during the early 1980s, compiling a 28-2 record under legendary coach Tom Osborne. He spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach with the Cornhuskers and most recently was director of player development/offensive assistant for the Green Bay Packers.
Gill, who fills the vacancy left by Jim Hofher, becomes the fifth black head football coach in Division I-A.
The Buffalo program Gill inherits went 8-49 in Hofher's five campaigns and has won just 10 games since becoming a I-A program in 1999.
