Last section of Busch Stadium comes down

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Demolition crews brought down the last section of Busch Stadium early Wednesday, an event marked by a fireworks display, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Thousands of Cardinals fans braved chilly weather to stop by during the last few hours of demolition. Some took home chunks of concrete and pieces of metal as souvenirs, either handed out by construction workers or grabbed surreptitiously by wandering onto the site.

The baseball stadium opened in 1966, replacing the old Sportsmans Park, which was renamed Busch Stadium in 1953 when Anheuser-Busch bought the Cardinals.

Demolition began Nov. 7 and was completed weeks ahead of schedule. The new Busch Stadium is expected to be ready for the Cardinals' home opener April 10 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
