Cutcliffe to lead Tennessee offense

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 28 (UPI) -- David Cutcliffe is returning to the University of Tennessee's football staff as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.

Cutcliffe, 51, served as the Tennessee offensive coordinator from 1993-1998 and twice helped the Volunteers lead the Southeastern Conference in total offense.

"I'm very pleased to have David back at Tennessee," said head Coach Phillip Fulmer, who made the announcement Monday.

After serving on the Vol's staff for 17 years, Cutcliffe left after the 1998 season to take the head coaching job at Mississippi. He had a record of 44-29 from 1999-2004 and also won four bowl games. He became the only coach in team history to win at least seven games in each of his first five seasons.

Cutcliffe was named assistant head coach for the offense and quarterbacks coach at Notre Dame in January. He had to resign after undergoing triple bypass heart surgery in March.
