WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A short-handed goal by Jochen Hecht late in the third period Sunday helped the Buffalo Sabres edge Washington, 3-2.

Maxim Afinogenov set up goals by Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek and goalie Martin Biron made 17 saves for the Sabres (14-9-1), who have won three in a row to earn points in seven consecutive outings (6


1).

Steve Eminger and Matt Pettinger scored goals and goaltender Olaf Kolzig made 26 saves for Washington (8-14-2), which has lost straight games -- all by one goal.

The Sabres won the shots on goal battle, 29-19. Both clubs went 1-for-7 on the power play.
