HALMSTAD, Sweden, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- The Ladies European Tour Thursday named Helen Alfredsson captain of the 2007 European Solheim Cup team.
Alfredsson is the third Swedish woman to be named captain after Catrin Nilsmark (2003, 2005) and Pia Nilsson (1998), and will lead the European Team against the United States in her home country from Sept. 14-16, 2007.
"To be the European captain at home, back in my own country and so close to where I grew up, really is an overwhelming feeling," said Alfredsson, who has amassed a 10-12-2 record in seven Solheim Cup appearances.
Alfredsson, 40, a five-time winner on the LPGA Tour and 11-time Ladies European Tour champion, led the PING European Junior Solheim Team to victory in 2003. She last appeared in the 2002 Solheim Cup in Minnesota, where she had a 1-2 record.
The U.S. won the 2005 event.
