"Marlon Anderson has been one of the best left-handed pinch-hitters in baseball the last three years," said Nationals vice president and general manager Jim Bowden. "One of our goals this off-season was to improve our bench, especially from the left side of the plate. Marlon's signing addresses this issue, and adds a veteran presence in our clubhouse."

Anderson has a career batting average of .264 in 860 games, with 47 home runs and 296 RBI while playing for Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, St. Louis and the Mets.
