Crosby named top NHL rookie for October

NEW YORK, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby, who scored 14 points in 11 October games to lead all rookies, Wednesday was named NHL Rookie of the Month.

The highly publicized Crosby was the lone bright spot for the Penguins (1-5-5), who finally recorded their first win of the season by beating the Atlanta Flames, 7-5, last Thursday.

Crosby, who was the top overall pick in the 2005 draft, beat out Washington forward Alexander Ovechkin, Los Angeles goaltender Jason Labarbera and New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

Crosby scored points in each of his first six games -- and in nine of 11 games during the month.
