MOSCOW, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Russian hockey star Pavel Bure will retire to lead Russia's Olympic team starting with the Turin, Italy, Olympics in February, a report said Tuesday.
Bure, known as the Russian Rocket for explosive speed and firepower as the NHL's leading scorer in 2000 and 2001, has not played for the New York Rangers since a March 2003 knee injury.
Bure tried but failed to return to active play several times since then.
"There comes a time when you have to make a decision and move on," Bure told online news service MosNews.com.
Russia, which won 23 world championships and eight Olympic gold medals during its Soviet Union heyday, has not won a world title since 1993.
"When I played I only strived to be the best, to win the gold and that's what I'm planning to achieve here as general manager," Bure said.
