14 players file for baseball free agency

NEW YORK, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Pitcher Ugueth Urbina and catcher Brad Ausmus Tuesday were among 14 major league baseball players who filed for free agency.

Urbina, a Venezuelan, was obtained by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Detroit Tigers this past season for second baseman Placido Polanco. He was the primary setup man for closer Billy Wagner, appearing in 56 games with the Phillies.

Ausmus, catcher for the National League Champion Houston Astros in 2005, batted .258 with three home runs and 47 RBI in 134 games last season.

A total of four catchers filed for free agency, with Raul Casanova, Todd Pratt, and Einar Diaz joining Ausmus.

Richard Hidalgo, who spent last season with the Texas Rangers, was the lone outfielder to file.

First baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, designated hitter Scott Hatteberg, shortstop Pokey Reese and relief pitchers Jay Powell, Matt Mantei, Terry Adams, Shigetoshi Hasegawa, and Al Reyes, also became free agents.
