John Harris leads Champions Tour event

SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- John Harris shot a 9-under-par 62 on Friday to claim the overnight lead at the SBC Championship at San Antonio, Texas.

The 62, a tournament record, gave Harris a three-stroke lead over Gil Morgan, who had held the record since the second round in 2004. Harris currently ranks 33rd on the Champions Tour money list with $471,350.

Morgan is alone in second place after an opening-round, 7-under 64. Defending champion Mark McNulty shares third place at 6-under 65 with Jerry Pate, Dan Pohl and Lonnie Nielsen.

At 5-under 66 are Morris Hatalsky and Mark James. Four players tied for ninth at 4-under 67, including Jay Haas, Dana Quigley, Craig Stadler and Ed Dougherty.

Also near the lead are Don Pooley, Bruce Fleisher, Andy Bean, and R.W. Eaks, who all are 3-under 68.
