Yankees, Mazzone end talks

NEW YORK, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Leo Mazzone broke off talks with the New York Yankees late Wednesday.

The Atlanta Braves had given the Yankees permission to speak with their long-time pitching coach earlier this week.

"The window for the Yankees to speak with representatives of Leo Mazzone closed today at 5:00 p.m. (ET)," said Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo on the team's Web site. "Both sides agreed to end their discussions without resolution."

Several reports indicated that Mazzone now will be pursued by the Baltimore Orioles. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said Mazzone, 57, is under contract to the Braves until Nov. 15. He has been with the team since 1979 and has been pitching coach under Manager Bobby Cox since 1990.

He has a long-time friendship with Orioles Manager Sam Perlozzo, who was given that job permanently last week after being interim manager after Lee Mazzili was fired on Aug. 4.
