Henman, Grosjean, Haas win in Madrid

MADRID, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Briton Tim Henman, Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean and German Tommy Haas were among Monday's multi-national first-round winners at the Madrid Masters.

Henman beat American Taylor Dent 6-2, 6-4; Grosjean defeated Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 7-5, 4-6, 6-2; and 2001 Madrid champion Haas knocked off Romanian Andrei Pavel 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Also Monday, Argentine Agustin Calleri defeated 2002 French Open champion Albert Costa of Spain 6-0, 7-5; Spaniard Alberto Martin topped Czech Jiri Novak, a 2002 finalist, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4; and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco defeated Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Costa, 30, indicated he may consider retiring at the end of this year. "It's possible that that was my last game," said Costa, "but I'm not completely sure."
