NHL: Atlanta 7, Washington 3

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Thrashers unleashed 38 shots on goal Friday night and easily beat Washington, 7-3.

Former Capital Peter Bondra opened the scoring with a power play tally midway through the first period. He later added two assists.

Marc Savard, Jaroslav Modry and Eric Boulton each had one goal for the Thrashers, who scored four times on the power play while the Capitals scored only once when having a one-man advantage. Atlanta capitalized on the power play by a margin of 8-7.

Both Vyacheslav Kozlov and Marian Hossa added empty-net goals late in the game as Atlanta rose to 1-1.

Washington fell to 1-1.

Andrew Cassels, Brian Willsie and Mathieu Biron all had one goal each for the Capitals. Washington's Olaf Kolzig made 32 saves while Mike Dunham only had to make 19 for the Thrashers.
