BOSTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Michael Ryder scored on a power-play goal in the third period Wednesday night as Montreal eased past the Boston Bruins, 2-1.

It was the season-opener for both teams as the National Hockey League returned after a one-year absence because of a post-lockout by owners.

Boston (0-1) was 4-3-1 in the preseason. Montreal (1-0) went 5-3 in the pre-season. Canadiens' goal-tender Jose Theodore made 29 saves.
