SAN DIEGO, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Adam Eaton allowed just one hit over seven innings Sunday, boosting the San Diego Padres to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The win allowed San Diego to finish the year 82-80, tying the 1973 New York Mets for the fewest victories for a full-season division winner. Still, the NL West champion Padres will open the 2005 playoffs Tuesday at St. Louis.
The Dodgers wound up their season 70-91 and fourth in the NL West.
Eaton, 11-5, gave up one walk and struck out a season-high 11 for the Padres.
Elmer Dessens, 1-2, went four innings, giving up four hits and a run while striking out two for the Dodgers.
Eric Young figured in the first two San Diego runs. He opened the Padres' first with a single and scored on a Mark Loretta double. In the fifth, Young's double allowed Sean Burroughs to score.
Mike Rose hit a home run for Los Angeles in the eighth. It was his first of the season.
