BOSTON, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Alex Rodriguez had four hits, including a home run, Saturday afternoon as the New York Yankees belted Boston, 8-4.
Gary Sheffield added a two-run homer and Hideki Matsui had two hits and one RBI for the Yankees, who have a one-game lead over the Red Sox in the American League East heading into Sunday's regular-season finale -- and have clinched a tie for the division title.
The Red Sox would claim the AL wild card with a win on Sunday or a Cleveland loss. If Boston loses and the Indians win Sunday, the teams will play a one-game playoff Monday at Fenway Park.
Winner Randy Johnson improved to 17-8.
Manny Ramirez hit two home runs and knocked in three and Tony Graffanino had three hits, including a solo homer, for Boston.
Losing pitcher Tim Wakefield fell to 16-12.
