BALTIMORE, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- The wife and son of legendary Baltimore Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas have settled a legal dispute over his name.
The Baltimore Sun reports Sandra Unitas, the football great's second wife, dropped a claim that John C. Unitas Jr. embezzled money from the marketing firm he and his father set up. The younger Unitas agreed not to challenge an agreement his stepmother made with Towson University allowing the school to name its football stadium after Unitas.
Father and son set up Unitas Management, a company holding rights to the name and Johnny Unitas's likeness, with the son holding a 10 percent stake. A court last year gave the son control of the company.
Johnny Unitas died in 2001. The rights to his name could be lucrative at a time when advertisers looking for sports legends are turning to past heroes to avoid possible scandals.
