LUXEMBOURG, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova and seventh-seeded Russian Dinara Safina were among opening-round winners at the Fortis Championships Luxembourg.

Tuesday, Hantuchova played a couple of tough tiebreaks against Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues before prevailing in an easy third set for a 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 decision at CK Sport Kockelscheuer.

The 2004 Luxembourg runner-up Safina had a relatively easy time against Luxembourg crowd favorite Anne Kremer, posting a 7-5, 6-2 win on the indoor hard courts here. Safina gave way to Aussie Alicia Molik in last year's finale.

A mild upset came when Israeli Anna Smashnova routinely took out eighth-seeded veteran Italian Silvia Farina Elia 6-2, 6-0.

Fresh off her title in Slovenia, Czech Klara Koukalova stayed hot with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory over her countrywoman Iveta Benesova. The 23-year-old Koukalova defeated Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik in Sunday's final at the inaugural Slovenia Open in Portoroz to capture her first-ever WTA title.
