SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers Thursday placed tight end Eric Johnson on the injured reserve list because of a torn plantar fascia in his right foot.
Johnson, who led the team with 82 catches in 2004, had been sidelined since the first week of training camp.
"Certainly our most explosive player last year was Eric, so we've lost production out of the offense," said Coach Mike Nolan on the 49ers' Web site. "That hurts, and you have to try to make up for that in other ways. We certainly have confidence in our two wide receivers from a playmaker standpoint, as well as at running back."
Johnson, a five-year veteran out of Yale, enjoyed a career year in 2004, registering 825 receiving yards and two touchdowns on a team-high 82 receptions.
