MLB investigates Piazza beaning by Tavarez

NEW YORK, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball weighed disciplinary action against Cardinals pitcher Julian Tavarez and Mets reliever Aaron Heilman for beanball incidents.

New York catcher Mike Piazza was not a target of the disciplinary investigation despite trying to confront Tavarez, who hit Piazza with a pitch Saturday in St. Louis and left Piazza with a concussion, a major-league official told the New York Daily News.

The investigation by MLB discipline czar Bob Watson included review of the umpires' report and video of the game.

Watson also was investigating a subsequent Heilman pitch that hit New York's David Eckstein in the left thigh.

Piazza declined comment on whether he bore hard feelings against St. Louis, but said he felt well enough to return to Tuesday's lineup against the Washington Nationals.
