Bagwell activated, has limitations

HOUSTON, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- The Houston Astros Friday activated first baseman Jeff Bagwell from the 15-day disabled list.

Bagwell, 37, underwent right shoulder surgery on June 7. He will be available only to pinch-hit for the rest of the season.

He was placed on the DL this year for the first time since the 1998 season and is batting .250 with three home runs and 15 RBI in just 24 games.

His 449 career home runs ranks 28th in major league history. In 15 seasons, all with the Astros, Bagwell has a .297 lifetime batting average to go along with 2,311 hits and 1,525 RBI.

Bagwell is Houston's all-time leader in home runs, total bases, RBI, walks and extra-base hits.

Last week, he completed a three-game rehab assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi. The team said on its Web site that he will be carried on the playoff roster should the Astros reach the post-season.
