MLB: N.Y. Yankees 5, Tampa Bay 4

NEW YORK, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Jason Giambi hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday night as the New York Yankees edge Tampa Bay, 5-4.

Hideki Matsui had two hits, including a home run, and three RBI for the Yankees, who remained one-half game ahead of Cleveland for the top spot in the American League wild card race and four games behind Boston for first place in the AL East.

In relief, winning pitcher Tanyon Sturtze rose to 5-3. Mariano Rivera tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to register his 36th save.

Jorge Cantu had two hits and two RBI for Tampa Bay, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Loser Joe Borowski fell to 1-3 after his fourth blown save.
