BOSTON, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Brandon McCarthy pitched seven shutout innings Monday to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox.
The Labor Day game was a makeup from an Aug. 14 rainout. Boston was ahead 5-2 in the fourth inning that day before the game was postponed.
McCarthy (2-1), a 22-year-old right-hander, gave up three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.
Tony Graffanino hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Red Sox had their two-game winning streak stopped. Boston now owns a three-game lead over the idle New York Yankees in the AL East division.
