COL FB: Va. Tech 20, N.C. State 16

RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A 19-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Vick to David Clowney early in the fourth quarter Sunday night helped No. 7 Virginia Tech beat N.C. State, 20-16.

Vick, the younger brother of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, made his first career start -- after missing all of last season due to his suspension because of criminal charges. He completed 10-of-21 passes for 108 yards and added 31 yards rushing on 13 carries.

With the victory, the Hokies (1-0, 1-0 ACC), the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions, avenged a 17-16 loss to the Wolfpack last season. That defeat was just one of three in 2004 for Virginia Tech and its last in the regular season.

Jay Davis threw for 311 yards on 27-of-43 passing for N.C. State (0-1, 0-1 ACC). He was intercepted two times.

The Wolfpack had won their previous eight season-opening contests.
