NBA Hornets may be moved for season

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The National Basketball Association is considering relocating the New Orleans Hornets for the entire season because of Hurricane Katrina.

The NBA does not begin play until November, but Deputy Commissioner Russ Granik has advised the league's 30 teams to prepare for such a move.

"Even if the arena is operable, it still may be impossible to play games in New Orleans for some time," Granik wrote in his e-mail message, the New York Times said Thursday.

It is a similar reality faced by the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League and Tulane University, both of which will operate out of Texas.

The Saints could play home games at the Louisiana State stadium in Baton Rouge, which was relatively unaffected by the storm, or in Birmingham, Ala., San Antonio and Los Angeles.
