SEATTLE, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees downed the hometown Seattle Mariners, 2-0, in a pitchers' duel that saw Randy Johnson allowing just three hits over seven innings.

The left-handed Johnson (13-8) shone as he struck out seven with two walks and did not give up a hit until the sixth inning.

Tom Gordon pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, while Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his 35th save of the season, preserving the Yankees' 10th shutout of the year.

Robinson Cano and Gary Sheffield both homered for the Yankees, who have won six of their last seven games.

Felix Hernandez (2-2) was dealt the tough-luck loss, as the 19-year-old right-hander surrendered the two runs on four hits in eight innings. He also fanned seven and walked four, but lost for the first time in five starts.
