Tony Graffanino had three hits and scored three runs while Trot Nixon had two RBI for the Red Sox, who stretched their home winning streak to 14 games and broke a two-game skid.
Winning pitcher Tim Wakefield rose to 13-10. Mike Timlin, who tossed a scoreless ninth, notched his third save.
Boston's Bill Mueller extended his hitting streak to nine games and has hit safely in 19 of his last 20.
Curtis Granderson, who had three hits, blasted a two-run homer, Brandon Inge also hit a two-run homer, and Pudge Rodriguez had two hits and two RBI for the Tigers, who lost their third in a row.
Loser Jason Johnson, who was torched for nine runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings, dropped to 7-10.
