Tennis star Kim Clijsters to retire soon

BRUSSELS, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters has announced she will retire before the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

"I see myself stopping in 2007 or early 2008 after the Antwerp Diamond Games," Clijsters told the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. "Maybe I will still play the Diamond Games in 2008 as a goodbye tournament, but that will be it."

Clijsters is ranked No. 4 among women tennis players. She has won six titles this year in spite of injuring her wrist and knee in recent years.

"My body already has a lot of problems," the 22-year-old told the newspaper, saying that traveling and playing in tournaments have become tougher for her.

Clijsters is a favorite in the upcoming U.S. Open. She said after that tournament she will think about what she wants to do in her final two years in professional tennis.
