D'Antoni gets new deal from Suns

PHOENIX, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- The Phoenix Suns Thursday gave reigning NBA Coach of the Year Mike D'Antoni a two-year contract extension, keeping him through the 2008-09 season.

Financial terms were not released.

D'Antoni, 54, guided the Suns to a 33-win turnaround last season when they went from 29 wins to a league best 62-20. It marked the third-best improvement in NBA history.

Phoenix lost to eventual NBA champion San Antonio in the Western Conference final.

"We are very pleased that Mike D'Antoni has agreed to this extension and it reflects the terrific job he has done with the Phoenix Suns," said Suns president and general manager Bryan Colangelo. "He is very deserving of all the success that has come his way including last year's Coach of the Year honor."

D'Antoni has been the Suns coach since Dec. 10, 2003, when he took over for the fired Frank Johnson following an 8-13 start.
