Jankovic knocked off in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Russian Anna Chakvetadze defeated Serbian Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in Monday's opening-round action at the $600,000 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament.

Czech qualifier Kveta Peschke beat French star Tatiana Golovin 6-3, 6-4 to set-up a second-round match with American Lindsay Davenport, who was supplanted atop the WTA Tour rankings by Russian Maria Sharapova on Monday.

Other first-round winners included Russians Elena Likhovtseva, Maria Kirilenko and Vera Douchevina, and Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues.
