NEW YORK, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Winning pitcher Esteban Loaiza hit an RBI single in a six-run first inning Sunday afternoon as Washington beat the New York Mets, 7-4.

With the win, Loaiza rose to 8-9. Reserve catcher Gary Bennett had three hits and scored a run, Ryan Church had two hits during the big first and Cristian Guzman added two doubles and two RBI for Washington, which remained 1 1/2 games behind front-running Philadelphia in the National League wild-card race.

Loser Kris Benson (9-5) didn't make it through the first. He was charged with six runs on eight hits in two-thirds of an inning in his shortest outing of the season.

For the Mets, Mike Jacobs had a pinch-hit, three-run homer in his first big league at-bat, and David Wright, Marlon Anderson and Victor Diaz all had two hits apiece.

The Mets could have avoided the NL East basement with a win.
