ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Ace right-hander Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox will return to the team's starting rotation.

The Red Sox said Schilling would start Thursday at Kansas City.

After a rehab assignment, Schilling, who underwent ankle surgery in the off-season, became the Red Sox' closer on July 14. In 23 appearances this season, 20 of which have been in relief, Schilling has posted a record of 5-5 with nine saves, but his ERA is a whopping 6.37 and he has been spotty as a closer.

Boston Manager Terry Francona and General Manager Theo Epstein made the decision about Schilling Saturday before Boston's game against the L.A. Angels of Anaheim.
