PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Bobby Abreu stroked a two-run double in the third inning Thursday afternoon, helping the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the Washington Nationals.
It was the first game of a day-night double-header at Citizens Bank Field. The win gave the Phillies the lead in the National League wild-card race by one-half game over Houston, pending evening games.
Jimmy Rollins added two hits for the Phillies, who have won five of their last six games. Winning pitcher Vicente Padilla rose to 6-11 with the first win in his last six starts.
Padilla escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second inning. Over six innings, he gave up one run and six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Loser Tony Armas Jr. fell to 7-6. He surrendered two runs and five hits in five innings, walking six and striking out three.
Cristian Guzman drove in the lone Nationals' run.
