DETROIT, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox Wednesday activated first baseman John Olerud from the 15-day disabled list.
The two-time all-star had been out since Aug. 1 with a left hamstring strain. Olerud, who joined the Red Sox in May, is a three-time Gold Glove winner and won the American League batting title in 1993 with Toronto.
Olerud started at first base for Boston Wednesday afternoon at Detroit and had two hits and one RBI. He underwent surgery during the off-season to repair ligaments in his left foot.
He has batted over .300 four times and has at least 100 RBI in four seasons.
Boston optioned infielder Kevin Youkilis to Triple-A Pawtucket after Tuesday's game against Detroit.
He batted .288 with one home run and nine RBI in four stints with the Red Sox this season.
