TORONTO, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Alex Rodriguez had three hits, including a home run, and scored twice Sunday as the New York Yankees beat Toronto, 6-2.
Jason Giambi hit two RBI singles, Derek Jeter had three hits and scored a run and Gary Sheffield extended his hitting streak to 14 games for the Yankees, who have won three of their last four.
Winning pitcher Al Leiter improved to 2-3. The former Blue Jay gave up four hits in 5 2/3 shutout innings with four walks and two strikeouts, and did not allow a run for the first time this season.
Closer Mariano Rivera, who combined with Alan Embree, Tanyon Sturtze and Tom Gordon to preserve the shutout, earned his 29th save.
Eric Hinske and Vernon Wells drove in runs for Toronto, which has dropped three of four.
Loser Josh Towers fell to 8-9. He surrendered five runs and 10 hits over six innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
