DETROIT, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Chris Chelios will return to the Detroit Red Wings next winter for his 21st NHL season.
Chelios, 43, a three-time Norris Trophy winner, re-signed with the club Thursday. He has scored 178 career goals and his 914 points is 21st among current NHL players.
Chelios, a likely Hall-of-Fame choice, won his first Norris Trophy -- honoring the league's top defenseman -- in 1989 while with Montreal. He earned the honor twice (1993, 1996) during his tenure in Chicago.
"Chris brings a great deal of experience and passion to the rink every day," said Detroit general manager Ken Holland. "He's been a great Red Wing, he's in excellent shape, and no matter what his age, you know he can play at a very high level."
In the 2003-04 season, he had two goals and 19 assists in 69 games.
