Monthly AL honors for Giambi, Zito

NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Jason Giambi and Barry Zito Wednesday were named American League Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for July.

Giambi, who has four multi-homer games this season, hit 14 home runs last month, the most by a Yankee in July since 1961, when Mickey Mantle hit that many.

The first baseman batted .355, led the league with a .974 slugging percentage, had a .524 on-base percentage, 74 total bases and lifted his batting average 33 points.

Zito yielded only 12 earned runs in 43 innings and went 6-0 with a 2.51 ERA and 30 strikeouts.

After a slow start, the Oakland Athletics left-hander is 10-8 for the season and has won his last seven consecutive starts. This is the third monthly honor of his career.
