Watney has early edge at the Buick Open

GRAND BLANC, Mich., July 28 (UPI) -- Nick Watney shot 8-under-par 64 Thursday to take the lead after the first round of the Buick Open.

He is one shot better than defending champion Vijay Singh and Jason Bohn.

Jim Furyk, who won the event in 2003, posted a 6-under 66 and shares fourth with Mark Brooks, Neal Lancaster, Craig Barlow, Olin Browne and Geoff Ogilvy.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods, seeing his first action since winning the British Open two weeks ago, opened with a 1-under 71.

Watney, 24, recorded a birdie on the first hole to move quickly into red figures and set the day's pace.

Paul Goydos and Glen Hnatiuk each shot 5-under-par 67 and are tied for 10th with Frank Lickliter, Roland Thatcher, Tommy Armour III and Rod Pampling.

Fred Funk and Zach Johnson lead a group of 15 players at 4-under 68.
