NFL suspends Eric Warfield

NEW YORK, July 20 (UPI) -- Cornerback Eric Warfield of Kansas City has been suspended for the first four games of the 2005 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Warfield, 29, a seventh-round pick by the Chiefs in the 1998 NFL draft, pleaded no contest in January to driving under the influence of alcohol following a September arrest in Overland Park, Kan. He was sentenced in March to 10 days in jail followed by 80 days of house arrest.

"The Kansas City Chiefs respect the commissioner's ruling as it pertains to Eric Warfield and will adhere to his decision regarding the matter," said Chiefs President Carl Peterson.

Warfield is allowed to participate in all pre-season activities, practices and games and is eligible to rejoin the team following its game against Philadelphia on Oct. 2.

In nine seasons, he has recorded 292 tackles and 19 interceptions in 104 games.
