Hopkins seeks to have decision vacated

LAS VEGAS, July 20 (UPI) -- Bernard Hopkins went to court Wednesday to overturn his 12-round split decision loss to Jermain Taylor last Saturday in their middle-weight title bout.

An official for the Nevada Athletic Commission said Hopkins filed a petition for a declaratory order to overturn the decision. There are two criteria to change a decision in Nevada -- a mistake in adding of the scorecards or collusion between judges.

The official said Hopkins' request has been forwarded to Nevada Chief Deputy Attorney General Keith Kizer and to the full Nevada Athletic Commission. A response is due by early next week.

Taylor became the new undisputed middleweight champion of the world when he out-pointed the 40-year-old Hopkins (46-3-1), who lost for the first time since being beaten by Roy Jones Jr. on May 22, 1993, ending his reign as middle-weight champion after 10 years, 82 days.

Hopkins failed in his 21st title defense, which is a record.
