The team has 10 days to trade him if he clears waivers or release him outright.

The 39-year-old southpaw had struggled this season. He signed as a free agent in the off-season.

In 17 appearances, including 16 starts, Leiter was just 3-7. In 80 innings, he had a 6.64 ERA with 60 walks and 52 strikeouts.

In his career, the two-time all-star has a record of 158-127 with a 3.76 ERA for the Mets, Marlins, Toronto, and Yankees.

In an earlier stint with Florida, Leiter was 27-21 with a 3.51 ERA and threw the first no-hitter in club history. He was traded to the Mets in a 1998 deal that included A.J. Burnett.

He spent seven years with the Mets.

Florida has recalled left-hander Jason Vargas from Double-A Carolina.
