MILWAUKEE, July 8 (UPI) -- Golden State assistant coach Terry Stotts was named Friday as the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Stotts will be the ninth head coach in the 37-year history of the franchise and succeeds Terry Porter, who was unexpectedly fired on June 22.
Stotts is a former assistant at Milwaukee. He spent four seasons (1998-2002) with the Bucks as an assistant to George Karl and also was a top candidate to succeed Karl before Porter was hired in August of 2003.
"I'm confident in the direction that Terry will take our franchise both on the court and in the community," said U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., and the Bucks' president. "He is a fine coach and leader who is well-respected in NBA circles. His work ethic and his desire to succeed will help our players excel and our organization flourish."
Stotts was a second-round pick by Houston in the 1980 NBA draft and played in Europe and in the Continental Basketball Associations before becoming a coach. He also has been a head coach with Atlanta.
