DETROIT, July 3 (UPI) -- Chien-Ming Wang allowed five hits over seven scoreless innings Sunday to lead the New York Yankees to a 1-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Wang (5-3) won a pitchers' duel against loser Nate Robertson, who dropped to 3-7.
Robertson surrendered one run and nine hits in going the distance. He walked one and struck out four.
Gary Sheffield drove in the game's lone run with a fourth-inning single. Hideki Matsui and Ruben Sierra each had two hits and Mariano Rivera recorded his 18th save for New York, which has won two in a row and four of its last six.
Matsui now has reached base safely in a career-high 30 straight games.
Placido Polanco tripled and was hit by a pitch twice for the Tigers, who have dropped six of seven and eight of 10.
