MLB: Detroit 10, N.Y. Yankees 2

NEW YORK, July 1 (UPI) -- Placido Polanco had two hits and had five RBI Friday night to lead the Detroit Tigers over the New York Yankees, 10-2.

Right-fielder Magglio Ordonez drove in a pair with a two-run homer in his first game of the season. Ordonez, signed as a free agent in the off-season, had been out since April 12 due to a sports hernia which required surgery.

Winning pitcher Jeremy Bonderman improved to 10-5, allowing two runs and eight hits in a complete game effort with two walks and five strikeouts. It was his second complete game in three starts.

Chris Shelton was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer for the Tigers, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Loser Randy Johnson sank to 7-6. He yielded seven runs and nine hits in five innings with one walk and two strikeouts.

Hideki Matsui homered for the struggling Yankees, who fell for the sixth time in eight games.
