PINEHURST, N.C., June 19 (UPI) -- Michael Campbell of New Zealand captured the U.S. Open golf tournament Sunday at Pinehurst, N.C., for his first major victory.
He held off a late charge by world No. 1 Tiger Woods, shooting a final round one-under 69. Campbell ended at even-par 280, and was the only player finishing at par or better.
Woods shot a closing a one-under 69 to finish at two-over-par 282 for his second runner-up finish at a major. He was second to Rich Beem at the 2002 PGA Championship.
Defending champion Retief Goosen, who was the leader at the beginning of the final 18 holes, ballooned to an 11-over-par 81 and tied for 11th at plus-eight.
